Zapatistas: Dignity, Resistance, and Autonomy

Welcome to our tribute to the Zapatistas, the indigenous-led revolutionary movement based in Chiapas, Mexico. This website aims to shed light on their struggle for dignity, autonomy, and justice, exploring their unique blend of armed resistance, political organization, and community-building. Through their actions and philosophy, the Zapatistas have inspired countless individuals and movements around the world, proving that a better world is not only possible but is being built right now, from the ground up.

Founded in 1983

The Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) was founded on November 17, 1983, in the Lacandon Jungle of Chiapas. This initial "uprising" was not a public armed rebellion but a clandestine formation by a small group of politically motivated individuals, a mix of urban leftists from northern Mexico's National Liberation Forces (FLN) and a core of Indigenous peasants. Their goal was to secretly build a revolutionary army rooted in the deep-seated grievances of Chiapas's Indigenous communities. For over a decade, they lived and worked in obscurity, gaining the trust of local communities and quietly preparing for a future armed struggle. This foundational period was a direct response to a long history of government oppression, land theft, and extreme poverty, laying the groundwork for their eventual public emergence in 1994.

The Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) announced its existence to the world on January 1, 1994, with a surprise armed uprising in the southern state of Chiapas. This date was strategically chosen to coincide with the day the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) went into effect. The Zapatistas viewed NAFTA not as a path to prosperity for Mexico's poor but as a "death sentence" for Indigenous communities, fearing it would lead to a further loss of land and cultural identity by exposing them to global market forces. Their rebellion, which captured several towns, was a direct protest against what they saw as decades of government neglect, oppression, and the negative impacts of neoliberal policies.
